The College of New Jersey (TCNJ ) partnered with developer, The PRC Group, on a mixed-use development called Campus Town. The project includes the development of approximately 12 acres of property adjacent to TCNJ’s Ewing campus, which created approximately 278,000 square feet of housing and amenities, including 195,000 square feet of living quarters with the capacity to house 446 students. The $120 million project features a state-of-the-art fitness center, shops, restaurants and over 600 apartments. Campus Town was hailed as the “perfect interaction space” where the college and greater community can meld together.
Curt Heuring, TCNJ’s vice president for administration, explained that research shows students fare better academically when they live on campus, but the college has long faced a housing shortage. “We can’t house as many students as we’d like,” he said. “But by working with PRC, we’re able to add 612 beds that we couldn’t otherwise afford to add or have no place to do it.”
Amerimix supplied mortar for the entire exterior of the Campus Town TCNJ project, which was exceptionally large: seven buildings featuring 100,000 bricks each calling for 100 yards of mortar per building. Four silos were used on the job. In addition, there was a tight timeline since students were returning to school after the summer and many of them had signed leases to move into the apartments. Amerimix preblended products were a perfect accompaniment to the mason providing the company with a consistent product that was worry-free in terms of delivery and quality. Amerimix allowed the individual masons to focus on their craft during installation and get the job done on time.
D.M Sabia & Co. handled the masonry work on the project. Founded in 1923, Nick Sabia’s company is one of the largest and most esteemed masonry groups in the Northeast. “We appreciate the attention to detail and the incredible service we get from Amerimix,” stated Sabia, the company’s president. “In addition, members of our team have commented that the Amerimix product is creamier and has a finer aggregate, which ultimately yields better results. When there is an extremely tight deadline on a project, it’s good to have a quality and consistent product to make sure things go smoothly.”
All seven Campus Town buildings utilized the same basic design to provide the development a cohesive, campus-like look. To aid in this effort, the Amerimix field support team offered their expertise to color match the mortar with the custom shade specified by the architect. Once the color match was complete, Amerimix provided preblended mortar with consistent color for all seven buildings in the project. This ensured the cohesiveness the architects desired.
“My company has been in business since 1923,” stated Sabia. “We have an excellent reputation to uphold and I only use products that are going to help my team provide the highest quality service to our customers. Whether we are working on a cutting-edge building at a major university, or a neighborhood supermarket, we want to be known for delivering on our promise. Amerimix helps me do just that.”
